Aripiprazole induced hypersexuality
During routine medical literature monitoring for pharmacovigilance, we came across a case report of aripiprazole overdose associated with hypersexuality. Although hypersexuality is a known adverse effect of atypical antipsychotics, in this patient, it led to a change in sexual orientation: the patient exhibited a pansexual orientation, with a significant focus on transgender individuals, highly compromising his familial and social life. ⚠️

Additionally, the patient reported the emergence of other impulse control disorders, including gambling 🎰 and suicidal ideation 💭. The symptoms appeared after treatment initiation 💊 and resolved after the medication was discontinued and switched to another therapy 🔄.
Scientific takeaway: 🧠
Aripiprazole should be used with caution ⚠️ in patients with reported high libido, addictions, and other impulse control disorders related to pre-existing dopaminergic system dysregulation that could be secondarily exacerbated by the drug.
Unofficial takeaway: 😅
In pharmacovigilance, one minute you’re reviewing safety data 📊…
…and the next minute you’re reading a paper that makes you check twice 👀 whether you have read it correctly.
And that’s exactly why literature monitoring is never boring 🔍✨
Key point: 📌
A notable change in sexual orientation was observed — the patient exhibited a pansexual orientation, with a significant focus on transgender individuals.
